This presentation will provide graduate students with an overview of the process for presenting at academic conferences:
- Selecting a conference (as well as a SIG or Association).
- Preparing and submitting a proposal.
- Considering and selecting a format (roundtable vs. paper presentations).
- Developing the presentation (including handouts, PowerPoints, and/or other visuals).
- Next steps once the conference is completed (publishing).
- What to expect from the experience and how to get the most out of the opportunities available at conferences (including pre-conference events and opportunities specific to graduate students).

Come join as Cameron walks through the steps involved in developing and submitting a proposal for the 2024 AERA Conference. Cameron will also offer some tips and tricks for delivering effective conference presentations and an ambitious plan for publishing as a graduate student.

Applying for Graduate Student Funding: Faculty Scholarships & SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship

This session will discuss funding for graduate students and will be broken into two parts:
- In part one, graduate students will learn about the faculty’s various graduate awards and scholarships, the application process, and tips for creating compelling applications. This session will run from 9:00 to 10:00 AM.
- Part two is geared toward PhD students interested in applying to the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship program. Students will be provided with an overview of eligibility criteria, submission procedures, and advice for crafting a strong application. Students may register for one or both parts. This session will run from 10:15 AM to 12:15 PM.

In this workshop session, we'll discuss how to prepare your conference applications for the best chance of success, specifically looking at the application for the CSSE conference and 2024 EdGSA Graduate Student Research Symposium, both of which will be held in May. However, knowing what goes into writing a standout application is relevant for all conference proposals!

Taught by a librarian, this workshop will briefly discuss different forms of evidence synthesis, and then move on to a step-by-step guide to conducting thorough literature reviews using the ERIC database. It will conclude with a condensed guide to using citation management software to organize the material found during your review.

In April 2023, Cindy Blackstock challenged academics to be activists: “don’t just write another paper, do something.” Henry Giroux has similarly argued that it is the responsibility of academics to be public intellectuals, to produce work that is accessible to the broader public. Through this presentation, we outline ways academics can produce work for a public audience, including podcasts, op-eds, and public art. Moreover, we'll explore how this work can encourage public dialogue and move public thinking.

In addition, the presenters will share their personal experiences of academic publishing, such as the seeming pressure to publish, the daunting nature of submitting an article, and how reviewer comments evaluating one’s work can feel personal.
